In the age of electric vehicles, where most carmakers focus their efforts on electric engines, BMW is taking bold steps toward the future. The company believes that hydrogen has just as much potential as electric cars or internal combustion engines. The Bavarians introduced their first concept model, the BMW i Hydrogen NEXT, at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019. Soon after, we saw the first pilot vehicle, an X5-based model that produced 401 horsepower. It used the same technologies as the Toyota Mirai. Although this was only a pilot project and only 100 units were produced, it was a huge success.

The car generates the necessary energy from a chemical reaction between water and oxygen. It only takes about 3–4 minutes to completely fill its two hydrogen tanks. What's more, a hydrogen-powered car can travel a longer distance about 504 km making it a real alternative to gasoline engines. BMW's vision suggests that hydrogen energy will become a major direction for the auto industry in the future. Because of this, it’s important to remember that taking care of the environment is our shared responsibility. Our planet's future is in our hands, and hydrogen technology is an innovation that can help us create a clean, green future.
